Smoking in Beijing .. Out of puff

No longer compulsory; in some places not even allowed

AFTER meeting only mixed success in its years of campaigning to improve the quality of its air, Beijing is tackling one noxious source of emissions, in a measure that promises better air in offices, meeting rooms and maybe even restaurants. From May 1st smoking has been banned in a wide range of public buildings. Meanwhile, hotels, bars, restaurants and internet cafés have had to provide non-smoking areas. Individuals caught lighting up in the wrong place may be fined 10 yuan ($1.40). Penalties as high as 5,000 yuan await non-compliant businesses and institutions.

Olympics 2008 - Beijing Gaining Glamour

Beijing the capital of China has always been a busy center for trade and commerce, educational endeavors and tourism. Recently there has been extra attention given to this city and to China on the whole. China will be hosting Olympics 2008 in Beijing.

Beijing is gaining glamour with its newly found glory after being chosen to host Olympics 2008. We can see added pride in the guileless smiles of the people. They say that it has added extra flavor to their lives and they are eagerly looking forward for the world to turn its attention to their busy city.

Summer Olympics 2008, China

China will host the prestigious Summer Olympics in 2008. Already, Olympics fever has gripped China and we’ll probaby see another exciting Olympics in 2008. The two cities that will host the Olympics in China are Beijing, which is the nations capital and Qingdao, a seaside city in the province of Shandong, in north-east China. Let’s get to know these two Olympics cities better.

Olympics Travel Tips for Americans

The 2008 Olympics® in Beijing are less than a year away, but many Americans will want to start preparing now for travel to the quadrennial contests and sightseeing in exotic China. Another reason to prepare for the journey in advance: the U.S. dollar is pretty much worthless paper.

I outlined some Olympics® side trips earlier, but I can’t send you on your way without a few travel tips:

If you travel by bus, try to avoid vehicles where other passengers are transporting fireworks.

Bottled water may be counterfeit. Check labels for the stamp of China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. Of course that may be counterfeit, too.

Bring your own toothpaste.

US sees risk of terrorism for China Olympics

WASHINGTON — The State Department says terrorists may want to disrupt this summer’s Olympics in China and warned of a heightened risk of terrorist attacks there in the coming months.

In a travel alert Friday, the department said that despite increased Chinese security measures, Americans who plan to attend the Games or who live in China should use caution at all times, especially in large crowds.
